Read the passage and answer the following questions

Humans can neither change the sun's radiation nor the earth's orbit around the sun. But they can control the increase in the amount of greenhouse gases and its effect on the atmosphere. Only during the last hundred years the carbon dioxide concentration has been raised alarmingly in the atmosphere and we humans can be held responsible for this.

The main cause of the increase in carbon dioxide level in the atmosphere is the burning of fossil fuels. Since the end of the 19th century, industrial activities increased rapidly giving rise to many factories. These factories required energy, which was produced through the combustion of coal. Besides coal, other resources of energy such as mineral oil and natural gas were also burned to heat our houses, run cars and airplanes or to produce electricity. Nowadays, about 85 million barrels of crude oil are burned daily. Every time a fossil raw material is burned, it releases carbon dioxide into the air.

Therefore, it is clear that more and more greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide are being generated worldwide by humans. Moreover, we are also strengthening the greenhouse effect by deforestation, which means cutting down trees. Every year enormous areas of forests are destroyed by people to obtain wood and to clear regions of mining and to create pasture. This loss of the forest causes dual problems. Trees that are burned up release large volumes of carbon dioxide gas into the air. On the other hand, as forests absorb a lot of carbon dioxide from the air and deliver oxygen instead, we also destroy an important storehouse of carbon dioxide when we clear forests.

Detailed Answer (a) (ii) building homes and getting wood
(b) (iii) Burning
(c) (ii) damaged
(d) (iii) Deforestation
(e) (ii) rising carbon dioxide
(f) (i) brings about
(g) (iv) To show responsibility of human beings is strengthening greenhouse effect
Detailed Answer

(a) We are responsible for the increase of greenhouse gases because we burn fossil fuels and cut down forests. These activities release a large amount of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

(b) The main cause of the increase in carbon dioxide level is the burning of fossil fuels such as coal, mineral oil and natural gas. These are burned in factories, houses, vehicles and power plants.

(c) According to the text, about 85 million barrels of crude oil are burned daily. This releases carbon dioxide into the air and strengthens the greenhouse effect.

(d) Trees are called an important storehouse of carbon dioxide because forests absorb a lot of carbon dioxide from the air and give oxygen instead.

(e) We should reduce the burning of fossil fuels and stop deforestation. We should plant more trees and use energy carefully to keep the atmosphere normal for our living.

Detailed Answer (a) impossible
(b) climate
(c) rising

Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world. It is over 29,000 feet above the sea level. It was named after George Everest, an Englishman who first surveyed the Himalayas in 1841. Many expeditions had been led to conquer Mount Everest. Some of them were abandoned. Many climbers who took part in them lost their lives. Sir Edmund Hillary from New Zealand and his companion Tenzing Norgay from Nepal led an expedition in 1953. The expedition was set out on March 10. As the climbers were going up, they set up camps at different places. They left some of their men and supplies in those camps. The highest camp was set up at 27,000 feet. Only Hillary and Tenzing reached the height on March 25. But the top was still 2,000 feet away. They went up and up. After two months of difficult and dangerous climbing, they succeeded in reaching the top on May 10. They must have felt excited when they stood there. They have gone down in history as the conquerors of the highest mountain in the world. They were given hearty welcome in 1954. Hillary went to Britain with Tenzing in 1955. They were given Tribute in 1956. In 1956, they were recorded in the Guinness Book. In 1958, both of them were given honour of world heroes.

A Brave Act

Last Monday I went to bed at about 11 p.m. and slept a sound sleep. Suddenly I woke up at about 2 a.m. when I heard a hue and cry at a little distance. I got up from bed and saw that a cottage was burning. I shouted for help and ran towards the cottage.

Many villagers came out with buckets of water. The fire was spreading fast because the cottage was made of straw and bamboo. An old woman was crying and saying that her little grandson was still inside. Hearing this, I could not stand idle. I covered my face with a wet cloth and entered the cottage.

The room was full of smoke, but I heard the child crying. I found him near a corner and brought him out safely. The villagers then worked together and put out the fire after some time. The child was taken to a doctor and he became safe.

The old woman blessed me with tears in her eyes. I felt very happy because I could save a life. That night taught me that courage and quick action can save people in danger.

Rafi: Good morning, Abid. How are you?

Abid: Good morning. I am fine. What about you?

Rafi: I am fine too. I heard that you have little knowledge about computers.

Abid: Yes, that is true. I can do only a few basic things.

Rafi: You should learn computer properly. It is very important nowadays.

Abid: Why is it so important?

Rafi: Computers are used in schools, offices, banks, hospitals, business centres and almost every workplace.

Abid: That means computer skill is necessary for jobs too.

Rafi: Exactly. If you know computer, you can write documents, make presentations, use the internet and communicate easily.

Abid: It also helps students, doesn't it?

Rafi: Of course. Students can collect information, attend online classes and learn many things through computers.

Abid: You are right. I should start learning computer soon.

Rafi: That will be a wise decision. I can help you practise the basics.

Abid: Thank you very much. I will begin from this week.

Rafi: You are welcome.
